In August 2011, I profiled hugely innovative guitarist Alexander Turnquist for the Music section. Based in Hudson, the young, Idaho-born Turnquist is a master of the 12-string acoustic who weaves autumnal patterns of sublime, crystalline bliss that shimmer with the compositional influence of Philip Glass and other Minimalists.

The VHF label recently released Turnquist’s eighth recording, a 12-inch EP titled Like Sunburned Snowflakes. Recorded in Hudson at Dioramaland Studio, the colored vinyl disc’s five gorgeous tracks were crafted using only the plucked harmonics (muted, not fully resonating notes) of Turnquist’s instrument, making for a truly unique sound.

Samples of the new record’s stunning music can be heard at www.vhfrecords.com.
