NYMPH Hypnotizes Hudson This Month

Self-described “spiritual psych” band NYMPH is something to behold. The Brooklyn group’s heavily hypnotic, wildly psychedelic head stew imbibes deeply from the trance-like ritual sounds of the ancient, indigenous music of Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. And on June 28 NYMPH takes the trance to Hudson for a performance at Savoia Bar & Grill.

NYMPH has been active in the New York psych, noise, and jazz scenes for seven years. The outfit’s expansive approach confounds easy genre ascription; the current seven-piece lineup represents a seamless and exuberant amalgamation of heavy psych, free jazz, modern minimalist composition, Krautrock, and visionary desert blues. Since 2011 the band has served as free jazz saxophonist Arthur Doyle’s backing ensemble, the New Quiet Screamers; the group has also toured North America and Japan and shared stages with Group Bombino, Deerhoof, Man Forever, Psychic Ills, Loren Connors, and Thurston Moore. Currently touring in support of its second album, New Millennium Prayer (Northern Spy Records), NYMPH recently finished post-production work on two live albums with Doyle and completed a collaboration and remix with singer Neneh Cherry.

NYMPH will play at Savoia Bar & Grill in Hudson on June 28 at 8pm. The Bunnybrains and All Stars Anonymous open. Tickets are $10, and proceeds will go to help local resident Amy Daley rebuild her childhood house, which was destroyed by fire last month.
