In the April 2008 issue of Chronogram I wrote about Creative Music Studio founders Karl Berger and Ingrid Sertso and their drive to digitally archive the nearly live 400 tapes recorded during the heyday of the fabled Woodstock institution from 1971 to 1984, when it was the center of the experimental and world jazz movements. Five years on, perhaps not surprisingly given the sheer volume of the recordings, the archival effort continues. And to assist with the monumental project, the couple's CMS organization is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to help produce compilation CD box sets comprised of music from its vital vaults.

Some of the hundreds of artists in the CMS archive include Jimmy Giuffre, Ed Blackwell, Don Cherry, Oliver Lake, Olu Dara, Colin Walcott, and Cecil Taylor, as well as Berger and Sertso themselves. Funds being collected during the drive will go to help finish restoration, digitization, and production on the first volume of three-CD box sets in the Creative Music Studio Archive Project Series, which is being packaged and distributed by the American Composers Forum/Innova Recordings. The organization is offering several enticing premiums to those who donate, so take a look at these incentives as you contribute to the crucial effort here.

The campaign wraps on August 22, so supporters shouldn’t wait long on making their tax-deductible pledges.
