Looking to jazz up your weekend? Warwick has the cure to your mid-summer slump. In its fourth year, the town's annual four-day jazz festival kicks off a weekend of approximately 20 performances starting on August 8. The Sugar Loaf Center of the Performing Arts serves as the main stage of the event, rounding out the weekend with headliners The David Liebman Group on Saturday and John Abercrombie on Sunday. However, the smooth sounds of the sax and guitar will echo all throughout Warwick, with performances taking place at local businesses and outdoor venues as well.

Contemporary jazz guitarist Jeff Ciampa starts the festivities with a concert on the Village Green, accompanied by Mark Egan, bass guitarist and trumpeter as well as Ciampa's longtime friend. The local duo have played together across Orange County and have made their way into festival lineups across the US and even in the Caribbean. However, as many musicians insist, there's nothing like playing a show on your home turf, so grab a lawn chair and check out this local favorite. Already known as a home for jazz music, the BeanRunner Cafe will host the Clifton Anderson Quartet the following day. Enjoy some soup and sandwiches or browse the cafe's art gallery while you listen to Anderson on the trombone.

A new feature of this year's jazz celebration is a workshop that will take place from August 5 through 11. During this time, students of all ages will be under the instruction of Bob Rosen: saxophonist, clarinetist, music educator, and founder of a big-band New York City orchestra. In just a week's time, Rosen teaches jazz music from the ground up—starting with the history of the genre and ending with jazz improv. In addition to having daily ensemble rehearsals, students have the opportunity to jam with the professionals and even perform in front of audiences throughout the week.
