Like our favorite books or movies, food too has the ability to transport us out of the Hudson Valley and onto a tropical island, to the mountains of South America, or, if you're eating at Gigi Market on a Saturday evening, to a small village in Italy. Combining the Italian words for agriculture and tourism, agriturismo is a concept that turns dining into a foreign experience. Every Saturday from now until October, Gigi combines this 60-year-old Italian tradition with local ingredients to produce a farm fresh three-course menu.

The Red Hook restaurant announces their dining selection for the week on Fridays, supporting local farms like Greig Farm, located right in the eatery's backyard. Enjoy the pastoral vistas while dining al fresco under a white tent on Gigi's lawn. Indulge in some hot homemade bread to begin, and move through an antipasti course with bright vegetables and locally cured meats and cheeses before the main course, which includes pasta or risotto, beef, pork, or chicken, salads, and sides. But don't forget to save room for dessert—agriturismo sweet treats include tarts, cobblers, and pies all made with whatever fruits are in season. If you're seeking a quintessential Italian experience, have a scoop of Gigi's homemade gelato.

So maybe you don't have the time to pack up your things and go on an impromptu excursion to the Mediterranean. Or perhaps you've been there before and are still searching for the American equivalent of those rustic Italian cafes. Either way, Gigi's agriturismo concept dinners will transport you and your taste buds. For more information and menu updates, click here.
