Every year, the Jazz Journalists Association presents awards that honor excellence in jazz music, recordings, and journalism. The occasion kicks off the organization’s JazzApril media campaign, which celebrates local scenes during Jazz Appreciation Month and culminates in International Jazz Day. Singled out in JJA’s 2014 Jazz Heroes awards category is native Hudson Valley pianist Peggy Stern, who is also the co-founder/producer of Kingston’s Wall Street Jazz Festival.
Stern is currently living in Austin, Texas, “to be near family,” where she performs. She co-founded the widely acclaimed Wall Street Jazz Festival, which focuses on female jazz artists, in 2003. Over the years the event has featured such exceptional players as Clair Daly, Francesca Tanksley, Jay Clayton, Nina Sheldon, and Stern herself.
And here she is, performing in a vintage clip with bassist Arthur Knell and drummer Thiery Aprino:
Chronogram’s congratulations go out to Stern as we look forward to the 2014 Wall Street Jazz Festival. For updates on the festival, visit http://www.wallstreetjazzfestival.com/.
