Poughkeepsie-based band Life in a Blender is an Upstate institution. Formed by singer-songwriter Don Rauf over 25 years ago, the group has released eight albums of music that ranges from blaring punk to agile chamber pop. The newest, We Already Have Birds That Sing (Fang Records), drops April 13 and is being trumpeted with a record-release show at BSP Lounge on April 17.

We Already Have Birds That Sing was recorded by Kenny Siegal at Old Soul Studios in Catskill and features such accomplished local guest players as Otto Kentrol and Brian Dewan. Rauf started the band in high school with cellist Dave Moody (then on bass). While the group’s core lineup has remained remarkably constant, the list of former members, guest artists, and collaborators includes Chris Butler (the Waitresses, Tin Huey), Chris Rael (Church of Betty), John Linnell (They Might Be Giants), Gavin Smith (Les Sans Culottes), Olivier Conan (Chicha Libre, Las Rubias Del Norte), and others. Life in a Blender’s “Friend from Quebec” was featured in Michael Moore’s film Canadian Bacon; “Mobile Wash Unit” appeared in Sara Lamm’s documentary, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soapbox.

Life in a Blender will perform at BSP Lounge in Kingston on April 17 at 8 pm with the Sweet Cementines and Chris Maxwell (Skeleton Key, Elegant Too). Admission is $8. For more information, call (845) 481-5158 or visit http://bspkingston.com/.
