Born and raised in Music City, USA—Nashville, Tennessee, in case you didn’t know—Laura Cantrell studied accounting in college. Thankfully for lovers of real-deal country sounds, however, she’s augmented her career as a Bank of America numbers-cruncher (and host of WFMU’s “Radio Thrift Shop”) with her better-known vocation as a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and recording artist. On the heels of No Way There From Here
(Spit and Polish Records), her fifth studio album, Cantrell will perform at BSP Lounge on April 24.
Recorded in her hometown, No Way There From Here is Cantrell’s first originals-dominated release since 2005’s Humming by the Flowered Vine (Matador Records). The new disc has drawn praise for its maker’s bell-clear voice and the highly personal feel of her story-songs, which, Rolling Stone says, “illuminate more than explain—just enough to make you want to hear ’em again.”
Cantrell recently sang the album’s single “Starry Skies” on CBS TV’s “This Morning”:
