The manner in which the creative arc of Brooklyn band Elysian Fields continues to evolve is akin to the finest vintage port. Since 1995 the group formed around core members Jennifer Charles (voice) and Oren Bloedow (guitar) has been making irresistibly swooning, dark, sexy, and sultry music that’s made them a firm favorite among musical connoisseurs—especially in France, which is perhaps poetically apt and indicative of that nation’s famously sophisticated taste. And Hudson Valley palates will finally get their own sampling this Friday when the band appears alongside Ben Perowsky’s Moodswing Orchestra featuring lady rapper TK Wonder at the Colony Cafe.

There a bit of artistic incest at play on this gig. The part-time local Perowsky was the original drummer for Elysian Fields, and both Charles and Bloedow have previously guested as members of his Moodswing Orchestra, an ever-evolving experimental indie-jazz collective, as has TK Wonder and ex-Woodstocker Joan Wasserman (AKA Joan as Policewoman). And it’s exactly the kind of cross-pollination that adds up to an evening of incredible music, so you’d be wise not to miss it.

As an indication, here’s Elysian Fields playing “Johnny” in New York in 2012:

Elysian Fields and Ben Perowsky’s Moodswing Orchestra featuring TK Wonder will perform on May 30 at 8pm at the Colony Café in Woodstock, New York. Admission is $10. For more information, call (845) 679-8639 or visit
