Upstate jazz advocacy group Planet Arts has been doing great stuff for the music, not only by releasing exceptional recordings via its so-named label, but also with its presentation of world-class live gigs via its JAZZ one2one series. This Saturday, as part of the ongoing latter endeavor, Planet Arts presents an intimate house concert by pianist Bruce Barth and bassist Sean Smith at the historic Beattie-Powers Place.

Barth burst on the New York scene in the late 1980s, joining Stanley Turrentine’s band and working with the late saxophonist for the next 10 years. Additionally, performed with trumpeters Nat Adderly, Terence Blanchard, and Dave Douglas and others. The list of icons Smith has worked with is as impressive as well: Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, Benny Carter, Flip Phillips, Clark Terry, Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, Peggy Lee, Lee Konitz, and Rosemary Clooney, to name a few.

No video seems to exist yet of Barth and Smith in collaboration, which means the Catskill show may be as spontaneously revelatory for the musicians as it will be for the audience—usually a good omen for jazz. ’Til then, content yourself with this clip of Barth’s trio live in 2004:

Bruce Barth and Sean Smith will perform at Beattie-Powers Place in Catskill, New York, on March 28 at 5pm. Tickets are $10. For more information, call (518) 945-2669 or visit
