Pianist Rachel Grimes was a founding member of the band Rachel’s, a Louisville, Kentucky-based chamber group that began in 1991 and won high praise for its moving fusion of Minimalist classical and avant-indie. In addition to touring with rock acts like PJ Harvey and collaborating with electronic artists like Matmos, the band created original scores for several films and theatrical and dance performances. Although Rachel’s disbanded when guitarist Jason Noble, another key founder, died of cancer in 2012, Grimes, who plays Club Helsinki on June 18, has continued to make music.

This month, she released her solo debut, The Clearing, on the Temporary Residence Ltd. Label. The disc has accrued generous critical applause, including a feature in The New Yorker that called it “majestic and radiant one moment, ominous and weary the next.” Here’s a fine aural illustration of that:

Rachel Grimes will perform at Club Helsinki in Hudson, New York, on June 18. Alexander Turnquist will open. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 day of show. For more information, call (518) 828-4800 or visit http://helsinkihudson.com/.
