Olana State Historic Site welcomes young grasshoppers, pre-school aged, to come fill up plastic terrarium bowls with soil, plants, and creature figurines of their choosing. Kids and parents alike are encouraged to learn the history of terrarium building, play around with the provided materials, and brighten the day with fresh green life that requires very little maintenance once taken home. Terrariums are traditionally decorative items, but the micro ecosystems that they contain hold much more value than a pretty shelf ornament; kids can grasp the responsibility of caring for a life that they created.

Building will commence on July 18 at Olana Wagon House Education Center (5720 Route 9G, Hudson). Advanced registration by July 16 is required for participation; call (518) 828-1872 or visit Olana.org. It is $15/child and $10 for members, and all parents are free.
