It’s always inspiring when art and music can be utilized to help a great cause. A fine example of this this is the annual Woodstock Guitar Sculpture Exposition, which culminates this Sunday with an auction of the one-of-a-kind pieces to benefit Family of Woodstock Crisis Hotline’s “Doors & Floors” program. “The floors and doors of our walk-in center are sorely in need of a facelift,” says Tamara Cooper, Family of Woodstock’s program director. “[The renovation] will make the center safer and brighten the environment for visitors as well as for our hardworking hotline volunteers.”

The exposition was conceived in 2002 by Woodstock sculptor and guitarist Rennie Cantine. “For six years I made guitar sculptures and put them up around town with store owners’ permission” he says. “When I saw the ‘Catskill cats’ project, I got the idea to make a guitar-shaped template for artists to use as a blank canvas.” Among the artists who contributed original works to be auctioned off at this year’s event are photographer Elliott Landy and sculptor and furniture maker Steve Heller.

Here, Cantine and friends make music for another charitable town event:

The Woodstock Guitar Sculpture Exposition Auction will take place October 11 at Landau Grill, in Woodstock, New York. There will be a preview at 2pm and the auction at 3pm, with live music to follow. Admission is free. For more information, visit
