Music in the Parks

A fleet of blankets decorate the lawn, scattered with picnic dinners and people in repose. Barefoot children run through freshly cut grass as the sun dips and glints off the Hudson River. The sound of bird and cricket songs mix with the live music happening on the stage. And it’s all happening in the shadow of a majestic historic mansion. For twelve weeks this summer, this vignette will play out as Music in the Parks returns for its 2016 season.

A collaboration of various local organizations like the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, AARP chapter, and the Rotary Club, the Town of Hyde Park’s Music in the Parks has been offering free summer concerts on the stately lawns of the Vanderbilt Mansion and Mills Mansion for 47 years. With an array of musical styles and skilled local bands featured, it just might be the perfect opportunity to experience different musical genres in a family-friendly setting.

Music in the Parks summer concert series at the Vanderbilt Mansion, 119 Vanderbilt Park Road in Hyde Park, and at the Staatsburg State Historic Site (aka Mills Mansion) on Old Post Road in Staatsburg: Wednesdays, June 1-July 27th starting at 7p and August 3rd-24th starting at 6:30p; free! Of note: the parks close at sunset; parking is limited so carpooling is recommended and drop-off/pick-up is a possibility; restroom facilities are port-o-johns; pets are welcome but must be leashed; park grounds are carry in, carry out.

Concert locations change each week, so be sure to visit the full Music in the Parks 2016 summer concert schedule at this link. For information on specific concerts, including event details and backup rain locations, follow their Facebook page. Or call the Recreation Office at 845-229-8086, ext. 2.
