Blues guitar virtuoso Rory Block is certainly no stranger to the Hudson Valley. She’s been performing in and around Woodstock since its glory days as an international musical hub, and has recorded at Bearsville Studios and released instructional DVDs on Happy Traum’s Homespun label. So no doubt the turnout will be healthy when she visits Tannersville’s Orpheum Theater this Saturday.

The daughter of a sandal maker, Block grew up in the Lower East Side and discovered the Mississippi Delta blues by way of the early 1960s Greenwich Village folk revival. At age 15, she began performing and seeking out and learning directly from surviving blues masters like the Reverend Gary Davis, Son House, Skip James, and Mississippi John Hurt. In the 1970s she became a popular draw in San Francisco coffeehouses, and, soon after, at clubs and festivals. The winner of five Blues Foundation W.C. Handy Awards, Block is especially revered for her interpretations of Robert Johnson’s music.

In this 2007 video, she tears up Johnson’s “Crossroads Blues”:

Rory Block will perform at the Orpheum Theater in Tannersville, New York, on July 16 at 7:30pm. For ticket prices and more information, call (518) 263-2000 or visit http://www.catskillmtn.org/.
