Dawes Drop in on Albany

Last week I covered an area appearance by an act whose music carries the proud reverberations of The Band, the Hudson Valley’s own Felice Brothers, and today I come bearing news of that of another: Los Angeles quartet Dawes, who visit the Egg on August 20.

As in the case of the Felice Brothers, there’s a pair of siblings who make up the core of Dawes. Formed by Taylor (vocals, guitar) and Griffin Goldsmith (drums) in the mid-2000s as the indie outfit Simon Dawes, the group changed their sound and shortened their name when co-founding guitarist Blake Mills left to pursue freelance playing and production. 2009’s North Hills showed a shift from the Shins-y pop of their earlier efforts to echoes Bob Dylan and The Band as well as the 1970s Laurel Canyon sounds of Neil Young, Jackson Browne, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Since then, the rustic route has rolled on with 2011’s Nothing is Wrong, 2013’s Stories Don’t End, and 2015’s All Your Favorite Bands, which adds contemporary textures.

Here, the band plays the title track of the latter live last year:

Dawes will perform at the Egg in Albany, New York, on August 20 at 8pm. Tickets are $34.50 and $39.50. For more information, call (518) 473-1845 or visit http://www.theegg.org/.
