Conversations with Ghosts | Poetry | Hudson Valley | Chronogram Magazine
The darkness comes in at night,
when you leave the windows open,
and the air is still.
It creeps in with the shadows
and settles in your belly,
along with the stars.
Sometimes you can hear what is said in the day by
putting your ear close to the earth
and smelling the shine of the moon.
I am wise to the night since it settles in my throat
as I lie along the edge of the day.
But it is never far enough away for me to see its full shape.
I see pieces of it on my fingers and even on my toes.
I do not know what it looks like though.
I just know the way it feels.
