The American Heart Association has announced that celebrity chef Ellie Krieger will keynote the 5th annual Go Red For Women Luncheon in Poughkeepsie on February 8, 2013. Krieger is the host of the Food Network’s & Cooking Channel’s popular show “Healthy Appetite” and author of numerous New York Times best sellers. Her most recent James Beard Award nominee Comfort Food Fix: Feel Good Favorites Made Healthy was released in October 2011.

Krieger, a registered dietitian, has a master’s degree in nutrition from Columbia University and completed her undergraduate degree at Cornell University. She was an adjunct professor at New York University in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health. She has been at the forefront of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, leading the Healthy Kids Fair at the White House.

The luncheon program also includes educational breakout sessions, an interactive heart check-up, and “It’s in the Bag,” a unique auction featuring sophisticated handbags, wallets and accessories. The participants in the BetterU Challenge will also be celebrated.

This life-affirming and inspiring luncheon is part of the Go Red For Women campaign’s 10th Anniversary year. Though 83% of coronary events in women may be prevented with simple lifestyle changes, prevention is hindered by the fact that many women don’t realize that CVD is a woman’s number one health threat. A primary goal of Go Red For Women is to close this knowledge gap.

“We’re delighted to have Ellie Krieger speak at our luncheon,” said luncheon chair, Denise Doring VanBuren, Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation’s Corporate Secretary & Vice President of Corporate Communications, “We know that making simple lifestyle changes, like eating healthier, can reduce heart disease in our community. Ellie’s expertise will make an impact on that front.”

Events like the Go Red For Women Luncheon help fund the life-saving work of the American Heart Association including public and professional education programs, awareness, advocacy and research. The AHA is currently funding 372 new and continuing researchers in the eight-state Founders Affiliate for a value of $82,732,146.
