Lenore Says the Poet is Acting Like a Shoe Salesman

On his knees
adjusting the strap
across a white instep
praising the slimness
of the ankle,
comparing it to music and birds,
pushing a new line of shiny goods,
hoping for a fit.
Shoes, poems. Honey,
we're all selling something.
