Material Remains: Women and Textiles with Hallie Bond Scholar, New York Council for the Humanities

Well into the 20th century, rural women produced most of the textiles used in their homes. Their quilts and coverlets are now prized by collectors for their looks, but what do they mean? Patterns and self-expression from fancy work to towels are revealed as ways used to express political beliefs, commemoration of loved ones and fashionable concerns. This lecture explores the fundamental changes affecting women’s lives, through textiles, over many generations.
