Parting Shot: Rhododendron

In 2003, Lilli Farrell, shadowed documentary filmmakers as they entered a tomb in the Great Pyramid at Giza. One night she was able to sit alone in the King’s Chamber, where she meditated and took photographs. She discovered unusual orbs of light floating in her frames and upon returning to New York in January 2004, Farrell, experimented with the images to explain the phenomena. These events led Farrell toward a technique combining acrylic paints, pastel powders, and photography to create a luminescent technique. Often mistaken for paintings, Farrell’s photographs highlight the magic inherent in nature.

Over the next three years the series “Whispers in Blue” unfolded. These images of plants and flowers, taken around the world, express an exotic mystery. Roses are one of Farrell’s favorite subjects because of their connection to love and gratitude. She is also drawn to their spirals of energy, a quality present under each layer of pedals. Many were shot at night with little light and minimal staging, only revealing what nature would allow. These intoxicating works have been said to evoke healing energy. Aside from still images, Farrell incorporated her technique into videos that are displayed at hospitals and doctors offices to promote health and healing.
