Reika Iwami, untitled, woodcut, 79" x 35" cm. This month, Unison Arts Center presents an exhibition, “Contemporary Japanese Prints,” curated by Emi Asano, that includes a wide scope of styles in work by Tokio Miyashita, Toru Iwaya, Yutaka Takayanagi, Reika Iwami, and Akira Tokuda. Iwami, whose career as a printmaker spans more than 50 years—she was Japan’s first post-World War II female printmaker of renown—creates her prints depicting modern Japanese life using the traditional woodblock printing techniques, then adding black, silver, or gold paint to the surfaces she creates. Iwami’s work is strongly influenced by nature, her aikido practice, and her passion for writing haiku. The “Contemporary Japanese Prints” exhibition will be shown at Unison in New Paltz, May 4-26. An opening reception will be held Sunday, May 4, 4-6PM. For more information, call 255-1559.
