MY SISTER, BONNIE SMITH, 2001, Western New York native Bonnie Smith has lived in Kingston since receiving her BFA in ceramic sculpture from Alfred University’s School of Art six years ago. Smith is a painter and sculptor who works primarily in and clay and oils, incorporating mixed-media elements like wood, bark, metal, and various found objects into her pieces, often firing them directly into the clay. Smith describes her work as “mostly figurative”—she likes to approach portraiture from the inside-out, rather than as an exercise in strict mimesis. “I like portraits that have an interior feel, rather than just a depiction of the physical form.” The 29-year-old artist just completed her first solo show of small, figurative paintings and sculptures at Kingston’s Wright Gallery in November. Smith has also exhibited at the Burchfielde-Penney Art Center, associated with the Albright-Knox Gallery, in Buffalo. To contact Bonnie Smith, e-mail paperflowers27@aol.com.
