View From the Top >Letters Troubled by Conscience To the Editor: The interview with Bard Professor Joel Kovel [“Problem with Zionism,” 3/04] is a perfect example of the top-notch reporting and intellectual commentary that can be expected from Chronogram. As a Jewish teenager who has traveled to Israel and is deeply troubled with the “bad conscience” of the Zionist ideology, I was highly enlivened to see such a smart, introspective, and historically accurate account. The interview served justice to the Jewish people for their suffering, while at the same time examined the irony that a democratic state can be created for one ethnicity of people while identifying another as “an other.” Professor Kovel is absolutely right, it cannot be achieved.
