Troubled by Conscience

To the Editor:

The interview with Bard Professor Joel Kovel [“Problem with Zionism,” 3/04] is a perfect example of the top-notch reporting and intellectual commentary that can be expected from Chronogram. As a Jewish teenager who has traveled to Israel and is deeply troubled with the “bad conscience” of the Zionist ideology, I was highly enlivened to see such a smart, introspective, and historically accurate account. The interview served justice to the Jewish people for their suffering, while at the same time examined the irony that a democratic state can be created for one ethnicity of people while identifying another as “an other.” Professor Kovel is absolutely right, it cannot be achieved. I would like to join Professor Kovel in the hope that a better path for mankind can be achieved.

In our 4/04 issue, a portion of text for the Hudson Valley Sudbury School’s Education Almanac listing was accidentally eliminated from the last paragraph. It was intended to read as follows:
“The [school in Framingham, MA, that provided the inspiration for the Hudson Valley Sudbury School] Sudbury Valley School experience has shown us what is possible when a school is run from trust. Children learn to trust themselves and they learn that they are responsible for their own lives and their own decisions. Most importantly they learn how to be responsible, effective adults.”
