Not Just for Reading Anymore

To the Editor:
I picked up a copy of Chronogram on a recent trip home to the Catskills. I found it best suited for housebreaking my new puppy. The paper you use is quite absorbent, and of an appropriate size as well.

Bad Karma

To the Editor:
The news note in the May issue of Chronogram re the Woodstock KTD [Karma Triyana Dharmachakra monastery] benefit concert [5/04, "Nightlife Highlights"] was insulting to me and to all that had seen it. You wrote that KTD "fights an uphill battle to improve its facility despite roadblocks from unenlightened locals." I can assume that we would be cheering if KTD wanted to "improve" its facility, which they have deliberately allowed to rot. Rather, they want to tear down the historic hotel [Mead's Mountain House] and replace it with a 62-foot-high structure with 48 bathrooms and room to sleep hundreds, all on top of a mountain pass. There are no "roadblocks" since the Planning Board and Zoning Board are complying with KTD's demands.

The majority of Woodstock's citizens are concerned with environmental, visual, traffic, road-widening costs (KTD pays no taxes though they cover their roof in gold), and water resources, to list some of the issues involved. We are hardly "unenlightened locals." Your note reveals a pro-KTD bias or a lack of sensitivity to our critical issues, or both.
