For the last five years, Grey Zeien's creative process has included "the harnessing of the weather."  Zeien's paintings are drawn over and then exposed to the elements for prolonged periods - sometimes up to two years.  "Rain, snow, sun all affect the different media in different ways," he says.  "Over the years I have learned to use specific media in conjunction with specific atmospheric conditions to provoke specific effects.  Of course, there are always variations.  It is like trying to control the accidental."  But it is such accidents of weather, he admits, that create the "true magic of the images," and allow him to accelerate the natural decomposition process in order to refer to aging and mortality in his work.  Zeien says his "process-oriented" approach to art also provides a "way of escaping the intensely meticulous work" that is his livelihood as a graphic artist and proprietor of Grey Printing in Cold Spring.  See more of Zeien's work at the New York North Arts Web site at www.NYNarts.com.
