Two Copies Are Better Than One

To the Editor:
I'd like to express my gratitude for the consistent high caliber of the articles in Chronogram.  Even though, as your advertising swells the magazine, it gets harder to find the articles, who cares?  We live through Chronogram, devouring the articles, patronizing the advertisers, and taunting our friends in New York City with the quality of our culture magazine vs. their rags.  We can't seem to throw out old issues (good reference material), and we always pick up two copies, so my husband and I do not fight over who gets to read it, and then we can pass one on.

Swinging at Gnats?

To the Editor:
Mr. Stern's editorial against the violence of abusive language, the prevalence of C-sections for convenience, and the incarceration of almost three percent of the population [Esteemed Reader, 10/04] was right on, but did it go far enough?  Have we swung at the gnat and missed the elephant?

If by the end of 2001 six million people were or had been in prison, by that time about 30 million lives had been destroyed as a result of the legalization of abortion in the 1973 Roe decision.  That's over 3,000 each work day.  Now that's violence!
