Printmaker Becky Alprin was born and bred in Washington, DC. In 2000 she received a BFA in painting from Boston University, an education she describes as "classical, with a heavy emphasis on figurative drawing." Exposed to printmaking as an undergraduate, Alprin says she found that the printmaking process "quickly became as important to me as painting," providing her with an "outlet for abstraction in contrast to painting and drawing."
After graduating, Alprin relocated to San Francisco, becoming an artist-in-residence at Kala Art Institute, a state-of-the-art print shop, digital media center, and gallery. Four years later, she continues to produce the bulk of her work there, noting that her recent prints "represent what has been a shift over the past several years from realism toward abstraction." Alprin's Untitled #3 was selected for the 20th annual national juried exhibition, "New Directions'04," at The Barrett Art Center this fall. Her work is also being featured in The Barrett Art Center's non-juried annual Holiday Show, opening on December 11. For more information, visit www.barrettartcenter.org or call (845) 471-2550.
