Nightlife Highlights
By DJ Wavy Davy
Jose Conde y Ola Fresca
AUGUST 4 AND 5
Host Roberto Bruno expands a musical universe inside his El Coqui taverna, this time scoring Miami-based Conde for two nights on the Rondout. Thursday the 4th, join El Coqui and the band aboard the motor yacht Teal, also featuring a Puerto Rican buffet. Friday, mambo into El Coqui, where the band will tear it up. According to Conde, on tour for his second CD, Ay Que Rico...Seconds (Pimienta/Universal), his blend of son, mambo, and cha-cha "is a very afterwork feeling, when it's time to ease into a good tasty-time kind of mood." Teal, 7pm sharp, $30.  El Coqui, 10pm, $12.21 Broadway, Kingston. (845) 340-1106. www.joseconde.com.
CitiZen One
AUGUST 5
Ya gotta love an artist who describes himself as soul singer, folkie, vocal trickster, bluesman, and experimental cowboy. CitiZen One, who resembles a young Steve Miller, seems to have broken new ground his whole career as well. From Southern-rock roots, this freespirit caught fire in Manhattan's downtown scene, straddling postpunk, free jazz, and subway busking. Expect the unexpected and like it at the cool new Maia restaurant. (Also of note: jazz guitarist/singer Erin Hobson appears August 26.)
8:00pm

Tap, Words, Funk...and BeBop
AUGUST 6
Hopefully you were lucky enough to catch Broadway's "Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk," a groundbreaking theater experience that layered the African-American experience in a rich tapestry of music, tap, and spoken word. The hip Arkadia Music Series at Inquiring Mind Gallery brings one of the show's artists, Joseph Webb, to town with his own touring ensemble for what promises to be a righteous evening. Cover includes refreshments, artist meet and greet, and prize drawing.
7:00pm
$15 ($12 advance). Saugerties. (800) 275-2352. www.arkadiamusic.com.
Jazz Sundays
AUGUST 7, 14, 21, 28
With a new guard in the kitchen, Gadaleto's brings in a new music regime too. Ubiquitous bassist Chris Macchia, a New Paltz grad, favors jazz but knows the regulars—including everything from flamenco to newgrass to blues. On Sundays Macchia leads the gig himself, sharing the stage with standouts Jimmy Goodman (from Leopard Studio in Stone Ridge) on vibes the 7th and guitarist Craig Schumn the 28th.
6:00pm
No cover. New Paltz. (845) 255-1717.
Huey Lewis & The News
AUGUST 13
Twenty-five years later, everyone can admit they secretly rocked to Lewis's hits "Heart of Rock and Roll" and "I Want a New Drug." Unlike some reunion tours, Lewis and band were unabashedly pop from the start, so how bad can they be now? Presented by Loco Lobo Promotions and Mix97-FM at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center with opener CloudNYne.
7:00pm
$45, $40, $32.50. Poughkeepsie. (845) 454-3388. www.midhudsonciviccenter.com.
Jane Monheit with HVYJO
AUGUST 20
Jazz singer Monheit is so hot right now, it's a good thing there's no snow up at Belleayre. From her debut at 21, Monheit's first three solo albums have all won critical acclaim and remained on the Billboard jazz charts for over a year. From the look of things, this is a jazz diva-in-the-making. With opening act the Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra, an area favorite featuring the best high-school-age players.
8:00pm
$50, $45, $40. Highmount. (845) 254-5600. www.belleayremusic.org.

AUGUST 28
TransArt presents their fifth annual Jazz in the Valley fest at a new locale, Williams Lake Resort. With a past lineup that's hard to beat, TransArt does it again with the Francesca Tanksley Trio, Judy Bady Trio, trombonist Craig Harris and Friends, and crowd-burner Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers. Visit TransArt's website to learn more about their African Diaspora music and educational services.
