His name might not be as well known as that of Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton, but John Abercrombie is nevertheless one of the most influential guitarists of the past 30 years. A key proponent of the atmospheric progressive “chamber jazz” aesthetic of the ECM label, which has released most of his recordings, Abercrombie, who plays the Rosendale Café this Saturday, possesses a highly individual style that weaves together jazz’s disparate threads with those of folk, classical, contemporary music, and psychedelic-tinged rock.

Over the decades he’s worked with John Hammond, Jr., Chico Hamilton, Ralph Towner, Jan Hammer, and McCoy Tyner, and with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette in the mind-blowing trio Gateway. Here’s the man himself, eloquently reshaping the Henry Mancini standard “The Days of Wine and Roses”:

For Saturday’s show Abercrombie will perform with drummer Bob Meyer and bassist Bill Moring. If you’ve never caught this genius live, here’s the chance to do it in a winningly intimate setting. The John Abercrombie Trio will perform at 8pm this Saturday, May 25, at the Rosendale Cafe in Rosendale. Tickets are $15. For more information, visit Rosendalecafe.com.
