Bassist and Painter Jam in Accord

We’ve featured Michael Bisio in Chronogram on occasion; the one-time Capital Region resident was interviewed for a July 2012 piece I did on Kingston pianist David Arner, and his 2011 CD Travel Music was reviewed in the magazine. These days, the bassist is a highly visible presence on the New York free jazz scene through his work with renowned pianist Matthew Shipp and others. Next week, Bisio will perform in Accord as part of an extremely curious pairing when he appears alongside artist Nancy Ostrovsky, who will accompany him with her "live painting."

Bisio has played on over 60 CDs, 11 as a leader and 10 as a co-leader. His first international release, 1987’s In Seattle, was chosen as one of the best jazz records of the 1980s by the Village Voice. Ostrovsky is a pioneer of “performance painting.” Her “paintings to music” are done “live” while she’s on stage with the musicians as they play. She’s worked with David Murray, Fred Hopkins, Erica Lindsay, Roswell Rudd, Thurman Barker, Joe Morris, and others.

Fill your ears and eyes with this taste of one of Bisio’s sublime solos:

Michael Bisio and Nancy Ostrovsky will perform at the Upstate House in Accord, New York, on December 14 at 7pm. Space is limited. For ticket price, reservations, and information, visit¬if_t=event_mall_comment.
