Daniel Levine, "The Way Around" (Churner and Churner)

My friend Mike Topp and I walked into the Churner and Churner Gallery to find two rooms full of white paintings. Behind a desk near the door sat a young bald man — a visual pun — as if he had been required to shave his head for this show.

Mike and I walked through the rooms, looking at the numerous blank canvases. (There are 19.) All are evenly painted, with no quirks (unlike the works of Robert Ryman, where you often see canvas underneath, and brushstrokes). "I like this one best," I said, pointing to a small bright one called "Evergreen." (The paintings vary in brightness.) I was joking, but as I inspected the work, I realized it was true. Some whites are more transcendent than others, more like pure light. Apparently I prefer light to white. (It's funny the gallery is named Churner and Churner, as if these are paintings of well-churned milk.)
