Matthew Shipp is easily the most important free jazz pianist to follow in the flying finger runs of Cecil Taylor, to whom he is often compared. To celebrate the opening of Troy arts center the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s 2014 season and newly acquired Baldwin grand piano, Shipp will bring his trio to the venue on March 15.

The Matthew Shipp Trio, which also includes drummer Whit Dickey and Troy bassist Michael Bisio, also has reason to celebrate, with the release of a new album on the Relative Pitch label, Root of Things. A mind-blowing soloist and a former member of the influential David S. Ware Quartet, Shipp leads his trio at concerts and at clubs across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. A 2012 performance at the London Jazz Festival was hailed as the highlight of the festival in the city’s most prestigious newspapers, The Guardian and the Financial Times, as well as the U.K.’s premiere jazz magazine, Jazzwise.

The Matthew Shipp Trio will perform at Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, New York, on March 15 at 7pm. Tickets are $15. For more information, call (518) 272-2390 or visit
