  • Mecca Normal

Canadian duo Mecca Normal has been rocking the underground since 1984, inspiring and helping to define the deep-D.I.Y. and riot grrl movements of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Comprised of vocalist Jean Smith and guitarist David Lester, the Vancouver band is known for focusing on feminism and politically charged themes in its raw, melodic, and dead-minimal music. And the pair will be doing exactly that at John Doe Records and Books on September 28.

Mecca Normal has released records on such hip labels as Sub-Pop, Matador, K, and Kill Rock Stars, as well as their own Smarten Up! imprint. Smith is a painter and the author of two published novels, and Lester is a graphic designer and painter whose work includes “Inspired Agitators,” a series of posters profiling specific left-wing activists. His graphic novel The Listener (2011, Arbeiter Ring Publishing) was nominated for a ForeWord Reviews Book Of The Year Award in the graphic novel category. Smith also formed the band 2 Foot Flame with New Zealand’s Peter Jefferies (This Kind of Punishment) and Michael Morley (the Dead C); the outfit released two LPs on Matador Records, 1995’s self-titled album, and 1997’s Ultra Drowning.

See and hear Mecca Normal rip it up on “Strong White Male” in this vintage live footage:

Mecca Normal and 75 Dollar Bill will perform at John Doe Records and Books in Hudson on September 28 at 3pm. For ticket price and more information, call (518) 212-7653 or visit
