Praises are due to Western Massachusetts for being a jazz haven since the days of Lenox’s Music Inn. Although that hallowed venue closed in 1979, the area has been keeping the Massachusetts jazz flag flying via the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival, which makes kicks off its 11th year on October 9 and runs for 10 days.

The festival begins Columbus Day weekend with Jazz About Town, the annual “jazz crawl” featuring local musicians in restaurants and lounges throughout Pittsfield’s Upstreet cultural district, and reaches its climax with a headline concert by six-time-Grammy-winning trumpeter Randy Brecker with the Greg Hopkins Jazz Orchestra on October 17. Among the other artists appearing are guitar great Frank Vignola (October 14).

The 11th annual Pittsfield CityJazz Festival will take place at venues throughout Pittsfield, Massachusetts, October 9-18. Most events are free. For more information, visit http://berkshiresjazz.org/.
