Sweet Clementines Celebrate New Album in Marlboro

Chronogram readers will John Burdick as one of the sage album reviewers in our Music section; they may also know him for his excellent local music coverage at the weekly Almanac. But perhaps not as many will also that John is as well an ace guitarist and songwriter who performs with local acts. His main musical project is the New Paltz-based art-pop band the Sweet Clementines, who recently released their second album, Lake Victoria, and will honor the disc’s unveiling with a record-release show at the Falcon on April 7.

Agile, literate, quirky, and earwiggingly melodic, the group has been hailed by the likes of Thett Miller and Marc Cohn/Chris Botti bassist Jon Ossman. “People who get to know the Sweet Clementines eventually begin to recognize how much enthusiasm we have for jazz, classical, and experimental music,” says Burdick. “Even if we appear to be just a slightly unusual rock group on the surface.”

Here, the quintet weaves the labyrinthine “Submarine” outdoors in the their hometown in 2010:
