Having been mentored by and played alongside Pete Seeger, Woodstock-area folk duo Mike & Ruthy (aka Mike Merenda and Ruthy Ungar) have never been ones to shy away from social issues in their songs and at their gigs. In light of the current protests by Native Americans at Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota against the planned Dakota Access Pipeline, which would cut through sacred tribal land and compromise the clean-water rights of generations of inhabitants, the couple has released an online video for their original tune “My Baby Drinks Water.”

“Ruthy wrote this a little while back after hearing about the chemical levels in the breastmilk of Hudson Valley mothers,” say the duo in a press release accompanying the video, which features Ungar singing solo acapella. “It basically works for all water issues, though. [After] seeing a beautiful newborn baby’s photo from a warm teepee at the Standing Rock protest, Ruthy really wanted to sing this song for the mamas out there. It’s for all of you. From the banks of the Ashokan to the Cannonball River and beyond. We all drink from the same fountain.”
