The carousel at the New York State Museum in Albany features three sizes of horses, two deer, and two donkeys, all of which pre-date even the machinery and platform. Made between 1912 and 1916, the full-sized carousel is an example of American folk art and popular entertainment, and the State Museum plays an important role in its preservation. On Saturday, November 19th, the historic carousel will be this month’s theme for Family Fun Day, with games, crafts, and other theme-based activities happening every third Saturday of the month.

The New York State Museum is the oldest and largest state museum in the country with 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, sixteen million scientific specimens, and one million cultural objects. It’s a center of art, science, and history dedicated to exploring the cultural and natural history of the state. There’s a Cohoes Mastodon, whose remains were found buried during construction of a mill in 1866. There’s an interactive map to help guide visitors through stories of New York State's natural history, historic landmarks, and New Yorkers who changed history. The Bird Hall boasts seventeen dioramas displaying over 130 taxidermy mounts of New York birds, organized by habitat. And The World Trade Center: Rescue, Recovery, Response has a new addition - three survivor stories from one of the largest emergency evacuations in American history. The Museum also offers a variety of educational public programs for learners of all ages, like afterschool programs, teacher workshops, and group visits.

The theme of the Family Fun Day, which happens every third Saturday, changes monthly. November’s carousel theme represents a celebration of the heart and soul of amusement rides at the turn of the 20th Century. Families will learn about the Museum’s carousel, and enjoy free rides, and can make their own carousel horse craft to take home.

Family Fun Day: The NYS Museum’s Carousel Celebration at New York State Museum Cultural Education Center, 222 Madison Avenue in Albany: Saturday, November 19, 2016; 1-4 p.m.; 4th Floor Terrace; Free! Don’t miss the NYS Museum as a great cold weather fun spot for families in the Hudson Valley, with its Discovery Place for the preschool to 8th grade set!
