The New Wave of British Heavy Metal—or NWOBHM, for short—is the name affixed to the hard rock movement that began in the late-1970s UK underground and exploded in the early 1980s via Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, and others. Sadly, Diamond Head, who come to the Chance this Saturday, never hit the commercial heights of the above acts. But the pioneering band nevertheless remains one the period’s most influential outfits, and today is spoken of in seriously reverent tones by devout, deep-digging metal heads.

Diamond Head was formed 40 years ago and is perhaps best known for being a major early influence on Metallica, who recorded four of the group’s songs: “Am I Evil,” “Helpless,” “The Prince,” and “It’s Electric.” “If it wasn’t for Metallica,” said Brian Tatler, the group’s lead guitarist, “Diamond Head would not have had this second wind.”

Here’s a vintage clip of Diamond Head performing “Am I Evil”:

Diamond Head will perform with Fiction, Pitch Black Sunrise, and the Greg Woods Band at the Chance in Poughkeepsie on November 19 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $17. For more information, call (866) 777-8932 or visit http://www.thechancetheater.com/.
