As any attuned Hudson Valley music fan will tell you, the area just seems to attract more and more musicians as the years go by. One recent musical transplant is Mount Tremper singer-songwriter Matthew O’Neill, who comes to our region from New York via Ontario. Next week, O’Neill celebrates the release of his newest album, Trophic Cascade, with a special performance at newish venue the Pines.

Trophic Cascade features 14 songs that dip into rock, country, folk, soul, and psychedelia. A devoted environmentalist and progressive activist, O’Neill touches on such themes in his music—but not without putting his money where his mouth is: He plans to donate 50 percent of the album’s sales to “frontline earth protection groups, with a focus on indigenous rights and conservation.”

This is O’Neill live in 2011:

Matthew O’Neill and special guests will perform Trophic Cascade in its entirety at the Pines in Mount Tremper on July 14 at 9pm. Admission is free. For more information, call (845) 688-7311 or visit http://catskillpines.com/pines/.
