Marty Stuart in Albany Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Marty Stuart was one of the guiding stars in producer Ken Burns’s recent epic PBS documentary, Country Music. Along with the late Merle Haggard, Stuart was an eloquent, wisely chosen narrator for the miniseries, as his knowledge of the music runs deep and is reflected in his own style, a mixture of honky tonk, rockabilly, and other strains of traditional country. David Amram in Tarrytown Regional resident, composer, renaissance man, and arts icon David Amram loves to mark the occasion of his birthday with a musical performance featuring as many surprise-guest friends as he can wrangle. And this year for two shows, on November 15 and 16 (at 7pm and 9:30pm each night), the one-time running buddy of Jack Kerouac, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and many others will do just that at the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown as he celebrates his 89th year. Green Fair in Albany

Sponsored by the local grassroots organization Community Advocates for a Sustainable Environment, the fourth annual Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair—the largest indoor/outdoor environmental fair in the Capital Region, say its organizers—will take place on November 16 from 10am to 4pm at the Amory at Sage College in Albany. The free, zero-waste event offers information, services, and products related to environmental-friendly living and features more than 65 for-profit and not-for-profit exhibitors; speakers on a variety of environmental and sustainability topics; and good food (including vegan options) and drink. "Rock & Roll Reading" in Kingston

Speaking of birthdays, Kingston’s Rough Draft bar and bookstore is celebrating its second one this month. To honor the milestone, the shop is hosting a run of special happenings that includes “Rock & Roll Reading,” a free event on November 15 at 5pm that features three authors reading from and signing copies of their most recent books: Mike Edison with Sympathy for the Drummer: Why Charlie Watts Matters, about the art and impact of the Rolling Stones drummer; Holly George-Warren with Janis: Her Life and Music, about the immortal Janis Joplin; and Peter Aaron (yes, your arts editor), as the coauthor of Ramones drummer Richie Ramone’s autobiography, I Know Better Now. Storytelling Workshop in Kingston

Presented in partnership with the Mental Health Association in Ulster County (MHA), the TMI Project’s ongoing True Storytelling workshop returns to the Clifford Beers Center at MHA in Kingston on November 21 at 2pm. At the workshop, participating storytellers will share their recent writing based on epiphanies and personal revelations—“stories that will inspire, sadden, madden, and enlighten you.” A Q&A with the storytellers will follow the readings.
