Grupo Folclorico de Poughkeepsie

This summer, Grupo Folclorico de Poughkeepsie will celebrate the 15th anniversary of La Guelaguetza to celebrate the culture, cuisine, and community of Oaxaca, Mexico. The event will take place in Waryas Park, overlooking the Hudson River, from 1pm to 7pm on August 14. Participants will enjoy traditional, flavorful dishes from Oaxaca, along with traditional performances, including native songs and dances featuring ensembles in customary bright, colorful costumes.

The organizing group behind the traditional summer festival, Grupo Folclorico de Poughkeepsie, was created in 2006 to preserve Mexican culture within immigrant families and the broader local community. Attendance to the event is completely free thanks to their fiscal sponsorship from Pathfinder Foundation, Basch and Keegan, Hispanic Federation, MVP, Poughkeepsie Public Library, and Radio Kingston.

More than 100 artists, musicians, dancers, and singers will perform during this year’s event. Some of notable groups include New York Folkloric Ballet, Triquis Without Borders, Costa Oaxaca Folkloric Group, Grupo Folclórico de Poughkeepsie, Guadalupano Folkloric Ballet, Natashuy Day House, and Banda Azul de Oaxaca. The singers are Alberto Ojeda, Mariano Cerza, Selines, and Araceli Mendoza.

In addition to the music and dancing, there will be traditional food and crafts for sale, a tent with free children’s activities, and information about local nonprofits will also be provided. All of the food for sale at the event will be traditional dishes from Oaxaca, including tejate (a nonalcoholic beverage made out of maize and cacao), tlayudas (a large fried tortilla often with refried beans, lettuce, avocado, meat, and cheese), and chapulines (grasshoppers).

The organizing committee behind La Guelaguetza de Poughkeepsie 2022 is made up of local non-profits in the Poughkeepsie region, including Hudson Valley Patriots for Immigration Reform, Casa Comunitaria de Recursos, La Voz, Poughkeepsie Public Library, Revolución Radio, and Sun River Health.
