The 2017 Summer Exhibition: VAGABOND TIME KILLERS features the work of 53 emerging artists; most are artists-in-residence in Wassaic. The works included depict each artist’s relationship, perception, and interpretation of our current location in space and time, and how art and its context can transform people, places, and ideas.

Curator Jeff Barnett-Winsby found an original photograph taken in Wassaic of a group of young people holding banners reading VTK. Written on the back was “Vagabond Time Killers, 1901, Wassaic, NY.” This image shows a distinctively different time in this community, yet there’s something vaguely familiar. Very little is known about these individuals, and why this was taken, but there’s a palpable level of creativity, irreverence, and excitement captured in the group. It shouldn’t be a surprise we relate to this odd group of strangers photographed here 120 years ago!

It’s on view at the Maxon Mills Gallery through Sunday, September 24 on Fridays 3:00-7:00pm, Saturdays 12:00 – 7:00pm, and Sundays 12:00 – 5:00pm. Curated by Jeff Barnett-Winsby, Eve Biddle, and Bowie Zunino, Wassaic Project Co-Directors.

Last Saturdays offers arts programs on the last Saturday monthly from May – October, ending with an Artist-Made Haunted House in the Mill for Halloween! Artists in Residence Open Studios allow you to walk through the Luther Barn Studios and speak with artists about their projects and process.

Save the date Saturday, September 23rd for the Annual Sandwich Club Summit at the Luther Barn Auction Ring. The 2017 theme is Something Different and focuses on sides. Sandwich enthusiasts meet to discuss pressing topics, with presentations, panels, workshops, a sandwich-themed exhibit, and a grilled cheese bar. FREE!
