Woodstock’s environs have been a mecca for forward-thinking jazz musicians since even before the 1970s/1980s glory years of the Creative Music Studio. Two of those who currently call the area home, pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Harvey Sorgen, will intertwine their boundless creative talents with those of Danish saxophonist Lotte Anker in a uniquely intimate performance at the town’s Photosensualis Gallery on March 9.

Anker has worked with other top US artists, such as Craig Taborn, Tim Berne, and Gerald Cleaver. She co-leads the 12-piece Copenhagen Art Ensemble with Crispell, a player of transcendent lyricism who was profiled in the April 2010 issue of Chronogram. The always-surprising Sorgen is perhaps best known as the beat-keeper of blues rock band Hot Tuna, but to me is one of the most innovative and underappreciated drummers on the scene. This is one hell of a band. Don’t miss it.

The Lotte Anker/Marilyn Crispell/Harvey Sorgen Trio will perform at Photosensualis Gallery on March 9 at 8pm. Tickets are $20. For more information call (845) 679-7995 or visit www.photosensualis.com.
