Anyone who’s been to one of Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble sessions will recognize Erik Lawrence. Besides being a long-time member of the Levon Helm Band—and an occasional Chronogram music reviewer—the Upstate-based saxophonist, flutist, and educator has performed with Bob Dylan, Chico Hamilton, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Aaron Neville, Buddy Miles, David Bromberg, Eric Mingus, Bruce Hornsby, Sonny Sharrock, Allen Toussaint, and a laundry list of other big names. And between his higher-profile jobs for the past few years Lawrence has also been leading his own stellar jazz quartet, a band he’s bringing to the Falcon this Sunday.
The horn man’s side players in the Erik Lawrence Quartet for this date are keyboard great Pete Levin, drummer Lee Falco, and guitarist Rob Reich. Below are a few recent minutes of the quartet casting its spell at the Falcon. Even the poor lighting, attributed to a passing power outage, can’t quash the foursome’s virtuosity:
