Now that summer’s in full force, we’re spending our days searching out the season’s best indulgences—and you better believe ice cream is at the top of the list. Over at Fruition Chocolate Works on Route 28 in Shokan, the gourmet soft serve game is what has us heading out to the picturesque Catskills for a frosty treat.
Renowned for its award-winning bean-to-bar chocolate and confectionery, Fruition debuted soft serve last summer as a fun way to keep connecting with local visitors after it closed its factory showroom to the public during the pandemic. Made with the same high-quality, ethically sourced ingredients that go into its chocolate bars and confections, like single-origin Kokoa Kamili Cocoa Powder from Tanzania and Fruition’s Dominican Hispaniola 68 percent dark chocolate, it’s no wonder the soft serve treats are back this summer by popular demand.
On offer starting this July 4 weekend will be build-your-own soft serve cups, a duo of sundae specials, and ice cream sandwiches. The soft serve is made with local Ronnybrook vanilla ice cream, and toppings include house-made chocolate sauce, bourbon caramel starring Tuthilltown Distillery’s Hudson Baby Bourbon, strawberry sauce, brownie bites, Amarena cherries, and more.
The sundae specials, riffs on nostalgic summer treats, include a strawberry shortcake sundae made with vanilla cake, strawberry puree, and fresh strawberries, as well as a s'mores sundae made with a graham cracker crumble, chocolate sauce, and marshmallow fluff. And who can resist a classic ice cream sandwich? The two house-made cookies studded with Dominican-origin chocolate chunks embrace a dreamy swirl of vanilla soft serve.
The sweet summer lineup offers the perfect pick-me-up after a sunny Catskills hike or a walk on the nearby Ashokan Rail Trail. And if you’re in need of a cold bottled water or seltzer, coffee, chocolate bars and confections to share with friends, and other provisions thoughtfully sourced from local suppliers, Fruition has that too.
