Re: “Valley En Vogue: Fashion Education in the Hudson Valley

So wonderful to see that fashion is being taken seriously in the Hudson Valley education systems. Garments probably comes second, only to food, in concrete human consumption. It is up to us to educate ourselves on how to create and perceive clothes so that they are not an environmental strain on the planet. Our students of today are the caretakers of tomorrow. Great job Chronogram for highlighting the growing importance of fashion education in a place where the American environmental movement first started - the Hudson Valley.

Re: “Marist Health Quest School of Medicine

Yikes. A third-rate hospital and extremely poor college teaming up to create a medical school? This is not going to produce the sort of sophisticated and knowledgeable doctors that this area sorely needs or slow by one iota the stream of people heading to NYC for medical care because they, rightly, don't trust Hudson Valley facilities for anything more than the simplest primary care.

Re: “New York State Now Requires Mental Health Education in School Curriculum

As a School Nurse and Health Educator for over 30 years in a school for students on the autistic spectrum, I learned early on the necessity for the implementation of this topic in curriculum.
New York State implemented Mental Health Curriculum (NAMI) this many years ago, and, when I became aware of this, I designed and implemented several levels of mental health lesson plans I taught for years. Starting with such simple concepts as Germs Causing Some Illnesses to Asthma vs Depression: Whats The Difference.... youngsters delighted and showed an amazing interest in these topics. The subject of Medications for All Different Illnesses ...also very important in helping students see the what and why of a major part of their lives.
It was a time-consuming and difficult endeavor authoring such curriculum, however so rewarding seeing students learn abou themselves. I am semi-retired now and so very glad to see such changes.

Re: “The Infinite Classroom

Great article - very thought provoking. Thank you for allowing me and HVSS to participate in your research.

I have been thinking about some of the questions posed by this article since I was interviewed. It seems like the color spectrum can be used as an analogy to intelligence. For many, many years there was the general believe that a person was either intelligent or not. This is analogous to the old black and white color TV. More recently, educators have admitted that there are multiple (but definable and limited in number) types of intelligence. This is analogous to the old 256 color monitors. I believe the reality is that there are an unlimited number of intelligences. This would be analogous to the real world which has an infinite number of colors.

When something is defined, it is also limited by and to the definition. To me this is true with the idea of defining types of intelligences; it creates limitations and categories people. Perhaps we should start to say there are an infinite number of intelligences instead of simply saying there are multiple intelligences.

Re: “A Nontraditional College for the Early Achiever

The program offered by bard college at simons rock looks impressive. I'm amazed by the level of what they offer. I have been looking into possibilities for my son, who is gifted, and this looks like a good fit for him. I like the model early college provides to keep him both challenged and able to continue to progress in a way that isn't possible in high school.
