Edie Sedgwick Book Talk at the Clark

Arguably the most iconic of the “superstars” of Andy Warhol’s milieu in 1960s New York, model and actress Edie Sedgwick starred in several of the pop art giant’s films and has continued to influence fashion styles decades after her 1971 passing. As It Turns Out, a newly published memoir by her sister, Alice Sedgwick Wohl, will be the topic of a discussion by its author and music impresario Danny Fields at the Clark Art Institute on June 1, as part of the center’s “Book Talk” series.

Called the “The Girl of the Year” by the fashion world in 1965 after she’d appeared in Chelsea Girls, Vinyl, Outer and Inner Space, Beauty No. 2, Space, and other underground Warhol films, Edie Sedgwick led a dramatic but tragically short life. Appearing frequently in public with Warhol, she was one of the most recognized faces of the 1960s but struggled with addiction and mental illness. Linked to Bob Dylan from when the two were living at the Chelsea Hotel, she was for a time the romantic partner of Dylan’s close friend and road manager Bob Neuwirth. Her last film was 1971’s Ciao Manhattan.



Alice Sedgwick Wohl is a regional resident, making her home in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Danny Fields, a friend of Edie and Warhol, is a legendary figure of the early punk era, having managed the Ramones and signed the Stooges and the MC5 to Elektra Records when he worked as an A&R man at the label.

“Book Talk: As It Turns Out— Alice Sedgwick Wohl and Danny Fields in Conversation” will take place at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on June 1 at 5:30pm. Admission is free.
