Re: “Rock & Roll Sanctuary: The Woodstock Home of Celebrity Photographer David McGough

David hired me in NYC for about 18 months during 1982-1983---he had more work than he could handle then and needed an extra photographer. I met him because I began working--fresh off the boat"--- at a photo store on 23rd & 1st where he'd get his slides processed and buy photo paper etc. He let me show him my amateur photo efforts, and gave me a chance.
I always find it strange to hear him described as a "paparazzo" because in my experience he wasn't intrusive or exploitative. He explained some essential techniques to me that helped me get the framing, the focus and the exposure right in a second ( and even when walking backwards!). Above all, he told me, he wanted the celebrity to look good in the photo. not just 'appear' in it. and to try and compose the shot and if possible, 'capture' them.

Others in the business had the craft ( and the aggressiveness) but David always pursued the art of photography. IMHO a lot of photogs these days, despite the sophistication of DSLR's, are just shooting snaps. David was (and is) a damned good photographer, regardless of subject. (and I had a fantastic time working for him).
And he's a really great guy--as this article and recent activities attest.
