America the Beautiful: Women and the Flag

The illustrated lecture examines depictions of women with the American flag or wearing flag-inspired outfits in prints, posters, sheet music covers, postcards, magazine illustrations, and advertisements from the Civil War through World War II. The women, as the allegorical figures “Columbia” or “America” or as spirited public patriots, often reflect the changing role of women in society.
